Where I'm Obsessed With Teeth

Dear God I'm actually watching the debate. (I blame Brendan.)

A couple of random thoughts:

Joe Biden has recently had a teeth whitening procedure.

Biden gets bonus points for pronouncing the word "nuclear" properly, and Palin loses points for mispronunciation. New-Klee-Ur. Is it really that difficult?

Biden's smile is creepy, and it's not just the teeth.

And what's with Biden's weird facial expressions? Is he trying to be a snot? 'Cause that's how he appears.

I don't mean to pick only on Biden, it's just that when he's talking, I'm mesmerized by the teeth and when it's Palin's turn, I am released from the magic spell and tend to tune her out a bit. She has nice teeth, just not as white.

Maybe it would help if Biden's teeth weren't about 2 feet long since they're being projected onto the Big Wall.

How long is this going to last? I'm so bored.

Yes, Biden's teeth!

I remember during the Clarence Thomas hearings there were a few times when the Republican senators, and maybe even some of the people testifying, did a good job refuting and exposing the nonsense Anita Hill was alleging. Every time that happened I remember Joe Biden (who was against Thomas) was smiling, smiling away as he was in damage control mode defending Hill. You could just tell that behind Biden's big smile he was furious! Since then I've always called him Smilin' Joe Biden!

Has a nice ring to it, no? :)

Biden was a stutterer until his late teens. That weird smile is something his speech therapist taught him to help relax his mouth and keep from stuttering.

Hi Tom! Thanks for stopping by. And Anon, I didn't know that, so thanks for the info. I won't hold that against him then. His super-white teeth, well . . . .

Teeth and Botox too!

Wow! I watched, too.

Blame it on my family.
And I was also fascinated and repelled by Biden's teeth. They were as white as his shirt.
I also wondered about Botox--his face was so immobile.
And the tan...
I also noticed his strange hand gestures. And he almost never looked at the camera.

On the level of argument, I think Biden needs a speaking coach. He used many long and convoluted sentences. It was easy for the lister to get lost. And he also used a lot of indirect causation:

"The intellectual (something or other) has changed..."
Rather than, "I changed my mind."

He needs practice not repeating the same line endlessly--b-o-r-i-n-g, as well as using direct, declarative sentences.

Palin? She did well with using strong, positive statements, and she avoided the negative sensibility that Biden had. On the other hand, she appeared to skip over some topics quickly. But she did seem to be alive and interested in the world.

On substance:
Biden tended to attack McCain rather than discuss his team's program.
Biden is negative about the ability of ordinary Americans:
1) he still insists that it will take 10 years to get oil from new domestic development (hey, Joe, we put men on the moon in less time that that!).
2)he thought that the Americans sitting around the kitchen table are waiting for government help (hey, Joe, it'll be a cold day in hell before I do that)>

Palin was positive and stayed on message. She talked about the McCain-Palin plans. She thought Americans were sitting around the table planning how to deal with this financial mess, and she thought they want government to get out their way.
But she still did not talk about where the blame for this financial melt-down truly lies.

I think Palin "won." For what it's worth.

S.P. creeps me out much more than Biden. She has this constant grin while talking about stuff. I'm a very peaceful and friendly person... but this woman could bring out the worst in me.

By far the best election debate summary I've read. You made me laugh! If you can do that amidst all this nonsense, that's saying something.

I actually didn't watch the debate. I just couldn't stomach it. What I did hear was that Biden and Palin looked like intellectual giants compared to McCain and Obama. I believe it.

Liri--as always, you can count on me for late-breaking up-to-the moment information on the issues that really matter! If I remember (or am forced) to watch any future debates, I'll be sure to create additional posts of such journalistic excellence.

Oh, and didn't mean to ignore everyone else--thanks for stopping by.

My official final analysis:

They were each scary in their own special way.
