I think I can say that 2012 has been well and truly seized so far. What do you think?
On New Year's Eve 2011, we toured four homes and on the second day of January, we put in an offer on one of those homes. We endured mortgage paperwork HELL and the even crazier Closing from Hell all through January and February. We finally closed on March 9, and moved in on March 17. We can never ever repay my mother-in-law and father-in-law for their help moving that weekend. It's hard to believe that was only a few months ago! We've already had so many adventures here at the new place (good and not-good), and we are very happy. All of the kids have come through this big change for the most part, and we are mostly settled and I'm ready to start painting and redecorating a bit.
After we got the deal on the new house settled, we still had to get rid of our old house, and we'd intended to fix it up and put it on the market. But life doesn't always go to plan--and sometimes in a pleasantly surprising way! We were approached by some folks we knew who were renting in the old neighborhood and were eager to stay in the neighborhood, but were looking for a bigger house. It's been a lot of work all around, but we have negotiated a lease-purchase contract with them and they are now living in the old house. We only had two months of double mortgage payments, which is much better than Brendan and I ever dared to hope for. And we think our old house is a great match for our new tenants/future owners and we hope they are very happy there.
In January, I started follow The Outlaw Way at my CrossFit gym, along with some other folks at the gym. I was super-apprehensive about it because I was worried
And ATLOSCon! ATLOSCon, as always, was tons of work and tons of fun. There were classes and rock climbing and ABBA singing and all kinds of Awesome. And I went to lots of regular ATLOS events, too. And things are just going really well ATLOS-wise these days, yay!
The first half of the year has four family birthdays, too; one each in March, April, May, and June. (I'm the outlier, in November.) Morgan and Ryan had fun birthday outings (gymnastics and laser tag, respectively), both of which I had to coordinate right on the heels of moving into the new house. Sean's birthday party a couple of weeks ago here at home, featuring Diet Coke and Mentos geysers, was lots of fun, too.
The kids have been doing well and keeping busy. Morgan is now on team in gymnastics, which she is enjoying very much. And Sean just started gymnastics, too. It was a rocky beginning, but I do think he likes it, too. Ryan and I will be working together in the house for fun (and profit)--it's so nice when they are old enough to be pretty darn useful, isn't it?
We've done some traveling, too, and had some visitors, too. In May, Brendan and I headed to Chicago for his cousin's wedding, and the kids stayed here with Kelly and Miranda for a Favorites Festival. Right after ATLOSCon, the kids and I took a road trip to DC to see my parents and my grandmother, who was in town for a couple of nights before she headed to Greece on a cruise (yeah, she's that awesome). My brother and sister-in-law were there, too, and came back here for a few days, which was fun. My parents came to see the new place at the beginning of May (and helped us unpack, thank you!), and we had seven house guests during ATLOSCon (hooray!). Our final bit of travel was just the other weekend when we went to Florida for a few days and played at the beach.
There has been no shortage of fun, adventure, friends, family, and awesomeness during the first six months of 2012. Yes, we have had our fair share of challenges and for a while there I thought we were under some kind of strange house curse, but everything has worked out more or less for the better!
I'm looking forward to a fun and exciting--but hopefully somehow less intense--second half of the year. We will do some house projects (I hope) and more settling into the new place. The kids will start homeschool co-op in August, and our usual fall routine will kick in. The most exciting news, which I will also write about in a separate post, is that we are getting a golden retriever puppy in August! They were born last week and are very cute. So I'm sure that project will come with some adventure, too.
Yes, we've gotten quite a bit accomplished so far in 2012. If you need me, I might be sitting on my butt for a couple of weeks before things get kicked into high gear again!
